Mission Organization: The Unending Op
Like most people, with the New Year here I am determined to organize my home and my life. I actually started this mission last month and quickly realized that the task was not so easily finished. So I had to divide and conquer. Starting with the laundry room.
With 5 people and 2 dogs you can imagine that laundry is never-ending. It overwhelms me actually. I had piles everywhere. Dirty piles in the laundry room. Sorted dirty laundry in my bathroom. Clean laundry piled high on my couch and my bed. Laundry was everywhere! So, since laundry is one thing in my life that I can try to somewhat get a handle on, I decided that will be my first mission.
Where to begin?
First I needed a blank canvas. So I ripped out the wire shelf that was attached to the wall, and got rid of all the boxes. If it wasn't laundry room related then it went.
Okay. Now I can think, sort of.
Let's start with some paint. A cheery color to brighten my mood. Ahhh, now that is better. (I couldn't forget to include my assistant for the night, pinot.)
Now, I knew I needed some sort of storage but I HATE wire shelves. I LOVE character. So I had this great idea to go to Home Depot and purchase unfinished cabinets that I can paint myself. Do you know how much unfinished cabinets cost? It would have cost about $300 for the kind of storage I needed. No thank you! Did I mention I am a SAHM. I am on a budget!
Time to get crafty :) Luckily a month prior I had purchased an old china cabinet and hutch from a rummage sale for $30. The top hutch would make the perfect cabinet for storage in my laundry room. All I needed was some paint and some Plaster Paris to give it the kind of character I wanted. I also took off the clear plastic that was attached to the doors so that I could reach in without having to open them. (That was actually my husband's idea.)
Attaching it to the wall took a lot of muscle and a good stud finder. I did not need that thing falling down on top of me while I was doing something I hating doing, like laundry. My husband even bought some brackets that secured the backing of the hutch to the actual hutch itself. A little extra reassurance.
Put in some nice baskets to store everything, and voilĂ ! Storage with character.
As far as sorting the laundry, I had limited space. 15 inches wide to be exact. So I searched and search and found the perfect fit at Target. So I thought. I forgot to account the fact the the dryer duct was in the way as far as depth. Luckily I have a brain ;) Crafty yet again! I attached the laundry sorter to the wall, lifting it just above the dryer duct and just below the light switch. Perfect!
Now all the essentials were complete and accounted for. Time for a little decorating and put everything in it's place. Ahhhhh, all done!
As far as keeping up with the Laundry, I decided to try to stick to a schedule. Here is my schedule that I came up with:
Monday - Sheets
Tuesday - Towels
Wednesday - Darks
Thursday - Colors
Friday - Whites & Delicates
Saturday - Catch up if needed
Sunday - Rest
Keep posted as I continue this unending Op.
